The old Leões Factory was rehabilitated to become an educational facility – the new Arts and Architecture Complex of the University of Évora.
The Department of Visual Arts and Design (DAVD) unites in the same School: Architecture, Music and Theatre. It is the only equipment in Portugal’s public university system with this structure, that favours interdisciplinarity between artistic fields.
The main building was restored, keeping the original façade of the old factory.
The side bodies suffered a significant intervention. In one of the cases there was a demolition and then the construction of a new building, contrasting in materiality and language but connecting to the past by keeping the form of the pre-existing volume.
This new body centres the activity and flow of its users. The addorsed covered structure assumes itself as a structuring axis of the complex.
The conservative materiality of the old factory contrasts to the vanguardian materiality of the newly introduced elements, clarifying the interventive concept – new is new, it does not intend to look old.
