Amélia, Funchal _______________________________________________ CITY: Madeira _______________________________________________ DATE: 1976 _______________________________________________ VISIT: Inside - Outside _______________________________________________ MORE DETAILS: The Casino da Madeira, set amongst beautiful subtropical gardens at the top of a cliff, with a view of Funchal’s port, was inaugurated in 1976, a design by famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemyer. The 221m long and 24m wide building, divided in 7 floors, suffered a recent intervention that respects the initial project leaving a sensation that nothing was changed, but presenting a renovated interior. The gamming area was concentrated on ground floor. The entrance level had a 200 square metre extension, making it an ample space, without barriers, where it is now possible to hold performances for a crowd of around one thousand people. The exterior is now profusely illuminated. It is the entertainment centre of Madeira (made up of a hotel, a casino and a congress centre) not only in terms of gamming, but also in regards to performance and cultural entertainment for the Madeirense public as well as the many tourists that visit the region. _______________________________________________
