The Portuguese discoveries, decisive moment in the construction of the modern world, justifies the great universal celebration. Thus, the proposition of an ambitious thematic platform that foresaw placing the oceans at the attention of the international community. It renounced to a strictly historical perspective of the theme, relating it with science, technology and art. On the other hand, it became clear that it was necessary to work in a path to avoid the waste that was seen in many international exhibitions of the 20th century. The option to realize it in the oriental side of Lisbon, in a degraded and polluted area, responded to this objective, as it allowed for the future return to the city, of this important territory. The plan by Manuel Salgado, counted on some anchoring equipments: the Oceanarium, the Atlantic Pavilion, the Orient Station and the Portuguese Pavilion, design by renowned architects. The event was considered a success – the best of its kind ever held.
