The Project for the renewal of the surroundings of the Monastery of Santa Maria searches to enhance and incite the relation between the monastery and the city.
The intervention replaces the inclination of the square and projects the creation of superficial drainage gutters that accentuate and make perceptible some relations. One of the water gutters reveals the alignment between the church and the castle, and enhances the presence of the Baça River, covered by the Street “Rua Eng. Duarte Pacheco”.
At east, the path of the old bridge over the Alcôa River is retrieved.
At the square “Praça D. Afonso Henriques”, the water fountain is restored and replaced at its original level.
The Street “Rua D. Pedro V” is lowered, close to the original levels, and thus releasing the Monastery’s windows and corners of the outside walls.
The coarse sand pavement surrounds the Abbey and evokes the old public square.

Sobre a obra...

 

O projecto de requalificação da zona envolvente do Mosteiro de Santa Maria procura potenciar e incentivar a relação entre o Mosteiro e a cidade.

 

A intervenção repõe a inclinação da praça e projecta a criação de caleiras de drenagem superficial que acentuam e tornam perceptíveis algumas relações. Uma das caleiras de água revela o alinhamento entre a Igreja e o Castelo, e evidencia a presença do Rio Baça, coberto pela rua Eng. Duarte Pacheco.

 

A Nascente retoma-se o percurso da antiga ponte sobre o Rio Alcôa.

 

Na Praça D. Afonso Henriques, o chafariz é restaurado e recolocado à cota original.

 

A rua D. Pedro V é rebaixada, aproximando-se das cotas originais, libertando-se assim o cunhal e os vãos do Mosteiro.

 

O pavimento em saibro contorna a Abadia e evoca o antigo terreiro.
