ARCHITECTURE: Eduardo Souto Moura _______________________________________________ ADDRESS: Amares, Terras do Bouro _______________________________________________ CITY: Terras do Bouro ______________________________________________ DATE: 1989-1997 _______________________________________________ VISIT: Inside - Outside _______________________________________________ MORE DETAILS: The intervention arose from the need to rehabilitate a building that given its moment in history found itself in ruins and without any function. Eduardo Souto Moura’s design was polemic, controversial and declined by those who defend minimal intervention, conservationism, the reposition of the destructed elements, in synthesis: by those who basically defend monuments as historical documents. Intervening, with the synonym of (re)designing, demands critical questioning as well as rigorous historical understanding of the building. It requires a critical analysis to discover the qualities to preserve, and thus defining the interventions strategy. The confrontation with the necessity to intervene doesn’t always demand a rigid methodology, like the one imposed by the Venice Charter, but must set from the consideration that each case is a case, as each building has its own specificities. It was with this spirit that the rehabilitation of the Pousada de Santa Maria do Bouro was made. _______________________________________________
